A casino employee, Kelley (@casinomassagekelley), shared a scenario that seems like it was ripped straight out of a movie—and it’s the kind of film that likes to put its characters through a gamut of unfortunate and frustrating events. Featured Video In a viral TikTok that’s garnered over 350,000 views, she shared how a gambler was denied a $150,000 slot machine jackpot. “I work in a casino, and this guy hit $150,000 slot jackpot, and then they came to pay him out, and they took his ID and everything, and it turned out he had banned himself from the casino, from all of the properties. So, he literally got trespassed and did not get anything.” Self-exclusion in Casinos In case you’re wondering whether or not you heard Kelley correctly, yes, the man excluded himself from the casino. Self-exclusion is a program people with gambling addictions use to help with their constant casino visits. Attorney General for the New Jersey State Department, Matthew J. Platkin, wrote about self-exclusion on the government’s website. “The program was established in 2001 to allow people with a gambling problem to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling in all Atlantic City casinos. In 2013, the program was expanded to also include self-exclusion for Internet gaming activities.” The AG’s website also gives some insight into the type of work that goes on behind the scenes for self-exclusion. It sounds like a fairly involved process. Additionally, the information appears to support what Kelley said happened to the $150,000 jackpot winner. “For land-based casinos, the Division will distribute a photograph and description of you to each casino. The casinos will then remove you from any mailing lists and make notations in their computer files that you are ineligible for any kind of credit or complimentary service.” The statement explicitly states that credits and complimentary services aren’t offered to self-excluded gamblers. There was one user on the application who said they self-excluded from casinos for two years. According to them, the man in Kelley’s story should’ve known better than to try and gamble while on the self-exclusion list. “I self excluded for 2 years. They explain all this to you before you sign paperwork. State cop told me if i hit jackpot just walk away.” Other reasons a jackpot payout may be denied Someone else penned that it wasn’t just self-excluded customers who were barred from payouts, however. If you’re planning on gambling at a legal casino, they warned that you should make sure you’re straight with Johnny Law. “One guy I know had won a prize. when they ran his name they saw he had a warrant, the casino host had him arrested instead of giving him the prize!” they penned. Police notified of ‘aggressive man’ before Liam Payne’s death
Former One Direction singer Liam Payne was found dead outside a hotel in Buenos Aires after the 31-year-old fell from his third-floor room balcony, Argentine police said on Wednesday. In a statement, police said they were called to the hotel in the capital’s leafy Palermo neighbourhood where they were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol”. Casino groups raised $13 million last month in amendment fight
Rival casino groups raised about $13 million last month from Oklahoma tribes battling over a constitutional amendment in Arkansas that could alter the future of a casino in Pope County. Cherokee Nation Businesses and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma are fighting over an amendment that would revoke the Cherokees’ casino license in Pope County. The amendment would also reduce the maximum number of casinos in the state to three. Any additional casinos would have to be approved statewide by a constitutional amendment and by voters in the counties where they would be located. It’s all quite confusing. But essentially, a “No” vote would mean a casino slated for Pope County can proceed as planned. A “Yes” vote would nix the already approved Cherokee-owned casino. The Cherokee Nation Businesses of Catoosa, Oklahoma, gave $8.8 million in September to Investing in Arkansas, a ballot question committee opposed to the amendment (i.e., in favor of the already planned and approved casino moving forward). The September haul raised the Cherokees’ total contributions to the committee to $11.6 million. The group reported having about $1.8 million on hand at the end of September, according to documents filed with the Arkansas Ethics Commission. The Cherokees also contributed $776,500 to Arkansas Canvassing Compliance Committee, another ballot question committee opposed to the amendment. The group had raised $776,500 and reported a balance of $101,974 at the end of last month. Arkansas Canvassing Compliance Committee has challenged the amendment in a case before the Arkansas Supreme Court. In a ruling earlier this week, the Arkansas Supreme Court rejected one of the group’s arguments but still must rule on a challenge to the amendment’s popular name and ballot title. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma contributed $3.2 million last month to Local Voters in Charge, the sponsor of the amendment that would tank the Cherokees’ plan to put up a casino in Pope County. The Choctaws have contributed a total of $8.8 million to the cause. The group reported having $723,128 on hand at the end of September. Money is still changing hands to support, and oppose, an amendment that would expand the state medical marijuana program. Arkansans for Patient Access, the sponsor of the amendment, raised $69,999 last month, bringing its total contributions to a little more than $2 million. The group reported having a balance of $197,744 at the end of the month. In September, Secretary of State John Thurston said the medical marijuana amendment fell 2,664 signatures short of the number needed to make the ballot. Arkansans for Patient Access said Thurston had refused to count about 18,000 signatures that Thurston said were invalid because the sponsor had allowed representatives of a canvassing company to sign off on certain documents related to paid canvassers. Arkansans for Patient Access took the matter to the Arkansas Supreme Court and is awaiting a ruling. Good Day Farm dispensaries in Hensley, Texarkana, Monticello, Van Buren and Little Rock made up all of the contributions to Arkansans for Patient Access last month. Stronger Arkansas, a group opposed the marijuana amendment, reported no contributions last month. The group had raised a total of $475,000 and reported a balance of $$47,989 at the end of September. Stronger Arkansas, formed by associates of Gov. Sarah Sanders, opposes amendments related to marijuana, abortion and education. A Bismarck woman filed an ethics complaint against the group last month amid questions about some of the the group’s financial transactions. Protect Arkansas Kids, another group opposed to the marijuana amendment, reported raising $15,000 last month, all from Little Rock chicken magnate Ron Cameron. Protect Arkansas Kids has raised a total of $25,000 and reported having $15,000 on hand at the end of last month. Protect Arkansas Kids is supported by national anti-marijuana organization Smart Approaches to Marijuana and has intervened in the Supreme Court case to challenge the amendment’s popular name and ballot title. A committee the Arkansas Family Council formed to oppose the marijuana amendment reported no donations last month. (photo courtesy of Rising Star Casino Resort) The proposal by Full House Resorts to move its gaming license from Rising Sun to New Haven could result in over $250 million in annual profits and tens of millions of dollars in taxes. That’s according to a preliminary third-party study the Las Vegas-based gaming company commissioned to show the economic impact of the move as it begins to court state lawmakers and local residents. The study—which was conducted by real estate services firm CBRE—shows Full House’s proposal to build a $500 million casino in New Haven would generate $266.6 million annually in revenue by the third year of operation, along with almost $83 million in taxes. Those projections would result in around $183 million of post-tax revenue for Full House, which would make it the sixth-highest earning casino in the state, per the Indiana Gaming Commission’s 2024 report. Full House is also proposing a 200-room hotel in a second phase of its build out. Once that is completed, yearly revenues could jump to $341 million. Both the projected revenue and tax impact of a casino in New Haven are significantly higher than what Full House currently makes and pays in Rising Sun at almost $44 million in winnings and $3.7 million in taxes. Good for Indiana Full House Chief Development Officer Alex Stolyar said the company’s pitch to lawmakers is simple: having a casino in the Fort Wayne area will result in more tax revenue for Indiana. “A chance to move into New Haven means a chance to not only capture gaming dollars that are leaving the state, but also to capture gaming dollars from out of state. Now Indiana can capture gaming revenues from Michigan, from Ohio and even from Illinois, which I think makes that just a great location,” Stolyar said. According to CBRE’s analysis, the New Haven site is “isolated from nearby competition” and would draw in people who are currently going to Michigan or Ohio to gamble. The analysis estimates the FireKeepers Casino outside of Battle Creek, Michigan, stands to lose the most business from a New Haven build, with the Hollywood Casino in Toledo losing the second-most. Four Winds Casino in South Bend and Harrah’s Hoosier Park Casino in Anderson would lose some business as well, CBRE projects. On the other side of that equation is Rising Sun, where CBRE says around 65% of the revenue lost by closing the Rising Star Casino there would go to other casinos in Indiana. “I think the main point when looking at new locations is that you’re growing revenue from the state and pulling in out of state revenues and not cannibalizing existing casinos,” said Stolyar. Economic impact Of the $82.8 million in taxes CBRE projects Full House to pay by the end of Phase One, $53.5 would go to the state, with over $18 million going to the city of New Haven and almost $1 million to Allen County. A little over $10 million would go to various other governmental units. Beyond gaming revenues and tax dollars, the CBRE report touches on construction impacts of a potential build saying that both phases would see about 1,860 jobs created. That projection, however, does not distinguish between direct construction jobs and indirect jobs. If the casino and hotel are built as planned, Full House says it will hire close to 3,000 people, most of which will be local. Despite the potential for an economic boost, many residents in New Haven expressed displeasure at the idea of a casino moving into their town at a public meeting last month. Some in New Haven are concerned over a rise in gambling addiction and crime. Others are more concerned about traffic at the already congested intersection of Interstate 469 and State Road 24. Ultimately, the Indiana legislature has the final say whether Full House can move its gaming license and build a new casino. “It’s still very early in the process, but we’ve met with many legislators and so far it’s been overwhelming supportive. A tribal casino in Oklahoma is using an app tied to its surveillance camera system that uses artificial intelligence to detect patrons carrying firearms. Travis Thompson, director of compliance for the Muskogee Nation Gaming Enterprise in Tulsa, Oklahoma, said it’s believed to be the first casino property to install the ZeroEyes digital detection gun-finding system in the United States. But the innovative weapons detection system wouldn’t be allowed in Nevada casinos, an industry expert said, because gaming regulations prohibit third parties from monitoring casino security camera video, an essential part of how ZeroEyes works. “Being in the entertainment industry and with the things going on around the world, active shooter scenarios are more frequent, and that’s a bad thing,” Thompson said. “We actually had one hit kind of close to home to us. It was at a local hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where an active shooter started in the parking lot and then moved inside of the hospital facility and it really kind of opened our eyes. It’s (the hospital) about a mile from our current casino that we have there.” After the mass shooting at Mandalay Bay into the Route 91 Harvest Festival seven years ago, Muscogee officials decided to be proactive in preventing a disaster and began a search for a solution that didn’t involve the intrusive use of metal detection arches at a casino entry. “ZeroEyes at the time kind of fit our bill of what we were looking for,” Thompson said. “It’s an AI-based machine learning detection software tied to a huge database of guns. It’s constantly using the camera feeds as a secondary stream to send that to an AI server.” Because ZeroEyes monitoring systems are viewed remotely and not onsite at the casino, the system would not be allowed in Nevada, according to Rick Vonfeldt, president of the Las Vegas Security Chiefs Association and the vice president of security at Caesars Palace. Impressed with technology “I was impressed with the technology,” Vonfeldt said. “ZeroEyes performed a demonstration for our association a few weeks ago at the Horseshoe and about 80 of our members got a chance to see it operate.” The system was impressive enough to administrators of the Regional Transportation Commission to install a ZeroEyes system at RTC transit centers to monitor passengers boarding buses with weapons. “RTC prides itself on its ability to identify transportation challenges and implement solutions,” RTC CEO MJ Maynard said in a statement to the Review-Journal in June just after installation. “Tens of thousands of people depend on our transit system every day, and we continually look for ways to improve their safety and security.” “The ZeroEyes system requires cameras to be monitored and if a weapon is detected, a call is made for officers onsite to investigate,” Vonfeldt said. Another casino security expert said in addition to the regulatory issue, a system like ZeroEyes may have other logistical problems because once a weapon is detected, security officers want to take immediate action to intercept the individual and precious seconds are spent matching the found weapon to a database to determine what officers are up against. “They have some limitations to how those analytics work, but generally speaking, when you talk about analytics of this type, it’s nearly impossible for human eyes, when they’re monitoring multiple cameras, to even pick any of this stuff up,” said Joel Kisner, a retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who founded and now operates Pinnacle Consulting and Advisors. Won’t catch everything “So, ZeroEyes won’t give you 100 percent detection. There are things they’ll miss. That’s within the analytics,” he said. “Maybe there’s resolution issues. There’s blending of the background, so like a black gun over black clothing. ZeroEyes has issues with when a gun is pointed at a 90-degree angle at one of the cameras, it has a hard time picking that up because it doesn’t have enough features in the gun and the smaller the gun, the harder it is to get the alert. So under the old way you’d have humans sitting down looking at a bank of televisions, trying to identify what they need to pay attention to. And a lot of things get missed just because it’s really hard for a human to watch one screen for extended periods of time, let alone multiple. Those analytics make it a little bit easier.” But Thompson and Muscogee are pleased with the system’s performance so far and noted that ZeroEyes wasn’t designed with the casino industry in mind — most of the company’s customers are schools, and in commercial and government settings in 40 states nationwide. Thompson said he couldn’t discuss the cost of the system and each individual system varies based on several factors, including the number of cameras monitored. “The way our system is set up, the ZeroEyes operation center notifies our tribal police, our local 911 centers and a mass notification goes out to employees and management that allows us to react faster,” he said.
