Three people have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries following a stabbing at a New Westminster casino in the early hours of Saturday morning. Mounties were called to reports of a stabbing at a restaurant within the Starlight Casino at 12:29 a.m. Saturday morning, police said in a release. Police arrived to find three victims who had suffered serious but non-life-threatening cuts, who were provided first-aid at the scene and transported to hospital. The stabbings had occurred during a fight between two groups of people, carrying edged weapons and unknown to each other, on the patio of the restaurant inside the Starlight Casino, police said. One suspect was arrested at the scene with the help of witnesses, while police are working to identify and find the other suspects. “At this time, we believe this is an isolated incident,” said Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “Within minutes of receiving the call to 9-1-1 our officers located and arrested one suspect. We’re asking for the public to help us in identifying the other individuals involved in this altercation.” The New Westminster Police Department are urging anyone with information, including video footage from the casino between midnight and 1 a.m., to contact the Major Crime Unit at 604-529-2430 or email mcucrimetips@nwpolice.org. This is going to add about 200 jobs in slots and other categories to the track, as well as provide more entertainment and experiences for our guests that come to the track,” Lianne Adams with FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing, said. This week marks 25 years since Harrah’s New Orleans casino, now known as Caesars, opened in its location at the foot of Canal Street. The building opened to the public on Oct. 30, 1999. It took seven years to get to that point. The state Legislature approved gambling in 1992, and Harrah’s opened a temporary casino in May 1995 in the Municipal Auditorium. It closed after six months, and the project spent three years in bankruptcy reorganization. Finally, the $381 million casino opened on the site of what had been the Rivergate convention facility, which was demolished in 1995. At the time it was Harrah’s 19th — and the largest — casino in its portfolio. “We had some long days and some long nights, but we finally got here,” Mayor Marc Morial said at a VIP grand opening event, according to The Times-Picayune. “Like a phoenix, this project has risen from the ashes…after being written off by so many.” The grand opening to the general public was preceded by free concerts at Spanish Plaza by Fats Domino, Clarence “Frogman” Henry and Deacon John as well as fireworks along the Mississippi River. In 2016, Harrah’s opened a 450-room luxury hotel adjacent to the casino. In 2020, as Caesars Entertainment Inc. became the parent company of Harrahs, the hotel and casino launched a $430 million renovation project which was unveiled last week. Hopefully those elected leaders will find a consultant that has both the credibility and experience to determine sociodemographic factors involving gambling problems or addiction and trend analysis of possible gambling-related issues such as bankruptcy, alcoholism, poverty, homelessness, domestic violence and human trafficking as they relate to Category 4 casinos in Pennsylvania. Nobody has ever accomplished that yet. Will the Nittany Mall casino open before 2027? Not likely. Before Bally’s Corporation backed away from the project last month, Bally’s anticipated that construction would begin in the first half of 2025 pending necessary approvals. If Ira Lubert doesn’t need any remaining approvals, including financial, why will the old Macy’s store sit there empty until 2025 while October through December 2024 are written off as a bridge too far? The planned 2026 grand opening will prove to be an overly optimistic plan for Ira Lubert’s team to achieve. The delay to 2027 will be attributed to unforeseen adverse weather conditions and non-availability of both material as well as a qualified and trained 350-person workforce. The beaming smiles anticipated at the 2027 ribbon cutting ceremony will soon fade when the Happy Valley casino begins to struggle financially. It will be a 24/7 operation that will surprise casino management when it proves to be nearly vacant at all hours except 6 p.m. until midnight daily. This isn’t a major urban area where slot machine players will sit there all day every day. Folks just don’t get rich twice. Last school year, the Penn State Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) group organized multiple anti-Israel protests in the wake of Hamas’ brutal October 7 terrorist attack on Israel. For the first couple of protests, the State College police handed out fliers to protesters warning them not to block the roads and advising them they’d be arrested if they tried. At the time, SJP just exercised their free speech rights and didn’t break any laws. However, things changed on Saturday, April 27, the day of the big Luke Combs concert at Beaver stadium that brought many visitors to town. SJP led a takeover of College Avenue, Atherton Street and Beaver Avenue, much to the frustration of those visitors. Adding insult to injury, the State College police didn’t even attempt to enforce the law. In fact, they appeared to be helping the protesters by using police vehicles to block traffic for them! This fall, on the one year anniversary of the October 7 attack, SJP took to the streets again, and again the police helped them. I have spoken to members of the police department and I know that they are not all in favor of that response. All of the relevant local government officials are Democrats. District Attorney Bernie Cantorna and all seven State College Borough Council members are Democrats. They all have the power to direct the police as they see fit. It sure seems like local Democrats are enabling anti-Israel protesters. Jason MaasState College ‘Give Trustee Fenchak the Documents’ Once again, we see alumni trustee Barry Fenchak in the cross hairs of the Penn State Board of Trustees. After losing a legal battle to immediately remove him from the board, the trustees launched a PR campaign to further sully his name. They wrote a “dissent” as if they had a ruling voice in the courts of PA. But here are some immutable facts: I have a personal history with Barry from the old BWI football chat boards. I am not a fan of his. I did not vote for him. Based on the CECO investigation, I concur he did something odious and unsettling. No one is contesting that. Not even the judge the trustees decided to publicly undermine. But this is all a distraction from the root issue: the board continues to withhold financial information that Barry Fenchak, as a duly elected trustee, is entitled to. FULL STOP. The judge ruled that the board could not dismiss him while his case is pending. The board has already banned Barry Fenchak from personally attending meetings, so he poses no immediate threat to any of the trustees, nor have any of the trustees reported behavior toward them that rises to the level of harassment. Once again, under Matt Schuyler’s “leadership,” the Penn State Board of Trustees imagines itself an entity unto itself, that doesn’t have to follow its own rules or the rule of law. Grand Jury Indicts Sanborn, Casino Co. Over COVID Fraud Scheme
Andy Sanborn drew another bad card and may have lost his stake. Arrested last week for alleged COVID fraud, the former state senator and his casino business are now indicted on felony charges for stealing from the state. The indictments handed up by the grand jury this week are related to Sanborn’s alleged fake numbers in his application for the Main Street Relief Fund grants. According to the indictments, Sanborn allegedly inflated the receipts for his casino by more than $1 million, netting about $188,000 in grant funds he was not entitled to. Sanborn’s Concord Casino is technically owned by Sanborn’s Win Win Win LLC. According to the indictments, Sanborn’s June 2020 application for the grant funds inflated the business receipts and wrongly claimed that Win Win Win had been in operation for at least a year. Sanborn, as an individual, is indicted on one felony count of theft by deception, and his LLC is charged with one count of theft by deception and theft by unauthorized taking. The charges against Win Win Win, which holds his gaming license, could end his bid to sell the casino business. Sanborn is under state order to sell the Concord Casino as the result of another fraud accusation. He allegedly applied for federal COVID relief funds to which he was not entitled, and then misspent the $844,000 on things like sports cars and car equipment. He also allegedly used his various LLCs to prepay himself about 20 years’ worth of rent. Sanborn is due in court next week for an arraignment on the charges. Source link
