2nd Indian River County casino shut down after Wednesday raid, FGGC reveals
VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGGC) revealed Thursday that a second casino that was allegedly being run illegally was shut down as the result of the previous day’s joint operation with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. The state agency provided new details about Wednesday’s raid that also shuttered the Panda casino. Its update, however, did not indicate where the second casino was located. The FGGC also detailed some of what was seized at the time. According to its numbers, agents and deputies rounded up 68 slot machines in total. Additionally, they also found over $37,000 in cash, along with information on bank accounts. “We don’t want that stuff here. We don’t want that kind of garbage here. We will not tolerate these types of arcades that are bringing just poison into our community,” IRCSO captain Joe Abollo said. Two people were arrested in connection with the raid at the Panda casino, officials said. The suspects, who were identified as Jinquan Lin and Jing Guo Yang, were booked on one count each of racketeering and illegal gambling. They are each facing million-dollar bonds. The investigation into the Panda, which is right off U.S. 1 and 8th Street, in Vero Beach, had started more than a year ago, officials said. FGCC alleged the suspects were running an ‘illegal casino-style arcade,’ with its Chief of Law Enforcement Gary Snyder explaining that the pair were predators, targeting the state’s most vulnerable citizens and visitors. From January to August this year, the country had received just under 23.57 million international tourists, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Mr Julapun added that the policy office estimated that introducing casino resorts could boost average tourism spending per person to THB60,000 (US$1,776), from currently THB40,000. The minister was quoted by the Bangkok Post on the possible boost to job creation from such venues. “I hope as many Thais as possible will be employed in the entertainment complexes, which may require training to ensure they have the necessary skills,” he said. The news outlet also reiterated some investment costs mentioned in the draft bill. These were: these complexes could only be operated by a company registered in Thailand, with a minimum capital of THB10 billion; a locals entry fee of not more than THB5,000 per visit; casino licences valid for 30 years, renewable in 10-year increments; and a THB5-billion initial licence fee, with an annual fee of THB1 billion. Reno woman gets kicked out of the Nugget Casino for not having her service dog
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -A Reno woman is coming forward after being kicked out of a casino for not having her service dog. Now, she’s looking for more education and accountability. Heather Vanus says she’s been a regular at the Nugget Casino Resort for the last 3 years. “The Nugget is my family,” Vanus said. Some weeks, Vanus says she visits her friends 4 to 5 times at the casino. Accompanying Vanus on her trips, is her medical dog Cherry, who is trained to alert Vanus if she’s about to have a seizure. “They know who we are. When we come in they automatically bring me water for my dog,” explained Vanus. What is typically a Cheers like atmosphere for Vanus, quickly changed two weeks ago, when a security guard approached her and said to leave because Cherry was not present. “They said you can either remove yourself, or you can leave in cuffs,” said Vanus. After it happened my fiancé looked at me and asked if that really just happened. I said that really just happened.” On the day of the incident, Vanus says Cherry had just gotten fixed. Since her fiancé was with her at the casino, she felt like it was safe to leave Cherry home if she had a medical episode. “Security told me that if she stayed at home, then I should have stayed at home with her,” recalled Vanus. Vanus, considered the Nugget her safe place and adds that not being able to see her friends there, has been heartbreaking. Now all she wants is an apology and for the Nugget to educate their staff on how to handle others with medical dogs. “Maybe this will make a difference because sometimes staff just isn’t trained,” Vanus said.
